The brother of a Turkish friend of mine asked me where I had lived in Germany. Their father like millions of other Turks had immigrated to Germany as a Gastarbeiter and the two of them had been raised in Bavaria, Germany.
When I answered "Göttingen", the name of the town where I lived the longest, the brothers burst out laughing.
Göttingen is a small city, more like a university town than anything, about an hours' drive south of Hannover, if memory serves me correctly. I remarked that although there had been a Greek restaurant in the center of town back in those days, there weren't any Turkish ones. It wasn't until I traveled to Berlin that I experienced my first Döner Kebab.
The brother asked me if I knew why there weren't any Turks in Göttingen. I had to confess that I hadn't a clue: "Ich hab' keine Ahnung."
"Because 'Göttingen' in Turkish means 'fucked up the arse'! No Turk wants to write home to his mother saying he is now living in Fucked-up-the-Arse."
